Printing Misaligned Front and Back Pages?

Sometimes when printing planner inserts double-sided, the front and back pages don’t line up perfectly. Here’s what could be causing the issue — and how to fix it.

Small Shifts Are Normal #

If the front and back are off by just 1–2 millimeters, this is considered normal for home printers.
When the printer pulls in the paper, a tiny misalignment can happen. This is a mechanical limitation of most consumer printers.

What you can do:

  • Make sure the paper is snug in the tray.

  • Clean the printer rollers.
Many printers have a “Roller Cleaning” function in their maintenance menu. (The location varies by printer model — check your printer’s manual.)

  • Use good quality paper to minimize slipping during printing.

If it’s just a minor shift, unfortunately, there’s no way to completely eliminate it — but the above steps help reduce it.

Major Misalignments: When Something’s Wrong #

If your front and back prints are severely off, such as:

  • Prints shifted heavily to one side

  • Prints not centered

  • One side much higher or lower than the other

then it’s most likely a software or settings issue.

Here’s how to fix it:

Printing Tips to Ensure Proper Center Alignment #

  1. Always Print with Adobe Acrobat Reader
This is the standard program that prints most accurately.

    • Download Adobe Reader here.

  2. Select “Auto” under Orientation
When printing, make sure under “Orientation,” you select “Auto” — not Portrait or Landscape.
This ensures the PDF content centers properly on the page.

  3. Set Scaling to Actual Size (100%)
Do not select “Fit to Page” or “Shrink Oversized Pages.”
Always print at Actual Size or 100% scale to keep everything properly centered.

If It’s Still Misaligned: Check the PDF File #

Sometimes, the issue isn’t the printer — it’s the PDF itself.

If the design inside the PDF isn’t perfectly centered, no printer will be able to print it aligned.

What to do:

  • Open the PDF and visually check if the design is centered inside the page borders.

  • If it looks off, there may be a misalignment in the file.
