How to Print with a Duplex Printer

If you have a duplex printer (a printer that can print on both sides of the paper automatically), printing your planner becomes even easier. Here’s how to set it up correctly to avoid upside-down or misaligned pages. #

📥 Download Adobe Acrobat Reader DC #

If you don’t already have a PDF reader, you can download Adobe Acrobat Reader DC for free here.

Printing Instructions for Duplex Printers #

  • Open your planner PDF file (using Adobe Acrobat Reader or similar).

  • Select “Print.”

  • Under “Pages to Print,” select “All.”

  • Set “Page Size & Handling” to “Actual Size” (or 100% scale).

  • Check the box for “Print on both sides of paper.”

  • Choose the correct flip option based on your planner layout:

    • Flip on Long Edge for portrait (vertical) planners.

    • Flip on Short Edge for landscape (horizontal) planners.

Understanding “Flip on Long Edge” vs. “Flip on Short Edge” #

When printing double-sided, you will often see two options:

Option Description When to Use
Flip on Long Edge The page flips along the longer side of the paper (left side like a book). Best for vertical portrait layouts (like most planners).
Flip on Short Edge The page flips along the shorter top edge of the paper (like a calendar). Best for horizontal landscape layouts.

Visual Example #

  • Flip on Long Edge:
Think of reading a book. When you flip the page over, the backside is correctly oriented to continue reading.

  • Flip on Short Edge:
Think of flipping over a notepad at the top. The backside is flipped differently — ideal for wide horizontal layouts.

If you select the wrong flip setting, your backside pages might appear upside down after printing — so make sure to match the flip setting to your layout orientation!

Important Notes for Duplex Printing #

  • Always select “Actual Size” or “100% Scale” so your planner prints at the correct dimensions.

  • Do a test print with 2–4 pages first to confirm the flipping direction is correct.

  • If your printer has options like “Reverse Pages” or “Auto Rotate,” it’s best to turn them off unless needed.

  • If you see extra margins or borders around your pages, check that “Fit to Page” is not selected.
