Want to create a unique and stylish DIY wire bound notebook with a half-hidden wire binding? This technique tucks the wire spine partially behind a folded cover, giving your handmade notebook a clean, professional look that stands out from standard coil-bound books. In this step-by-step tutorial, you’ll learn how to design, print, and bind your own half-hidden wire notebook using Planify Pro.
Whether you’re making a personal journal, a gift for a friend, or a product to sell, this binding method is surprisingly simple once you know the trick. You’ll design custom notebook inserts in Planify Pro, create a printed cover on sticker paper, and use a Cinch binding machine to complete the wire binding. If you’re new to planner making, our beginner’s guide to making a custom planner covers the basics of working with Planify Pro.

Bind Your Notebook
Now comes the fun part — assembling and binding your half-hidden wire notebook. The key to this technique is folding the cover around the spine so the wire is partially concealed, giving it a much more polished finish than a standard wire bind. If you’d like to explore other binding approaches, our lay-flat sketchbook tutorial uses PVA glue binding for pages that open completely flat.
- Cut the printed inserts to size
- Stack the cut pages neatly
- Prepare inserts for binding
- Peel off the sticker paper backing from the printed cover
- Adhere the cover to four pieces of chipboard (1–1.2 mm thick)
