DIY Booklet Binding Tutorial: Make Booklets with Signatures

Looking for a DIY booklet binding tutorial that produces beautiful, professional results? Signature binding is one of the oldest and most elegant bookbinding techniques — it involves folding groups of pages (called “signatures”) and sewing them together along the spine. The result is a booklet that opens smoothly and lays flat, perfect for journals, planners, sketchbooks, and zines.

In this step-by-step tutorial, you’ll learn how to design your booklet pages in Planify Pro, export them in the correct booklet layout, and bind them using a Coptic stitch. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crafter, this guide covers everything you need to know.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to:

  • Design a booklet: We’ll show you how to use Planify Pro to create a booklet with your favorite patterns, colors, and layouts.
  • Create signatures: Learn how to arrange and fold pages to create signatures for professional booklet binding.
  • Assemble your booklet: Discover how to sew the signatures together and attach a cover to create a finished product you’ll be proud of.

By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have the skills to make a variety of booklets, including planners, journals, notebooks, and more. Step 6: Bind the Booklet

Now it’s time to sew your signatures together. The Coptic stitch is a popular choice because it creates an exposed spine that looks beautiful and allows the booklet to open completely flat. If you prefer a different look, you might also try PVA glue binding for a smooth spine, or wire binding for a more modern finish.
